Dustienne truly gave me my quality of life back as I recover from Endo excision surgery. She’s non-judgemental, friendly, impressively knowledgeable and I’ve made remarkable progress with her, starting from a situation I wasn’t sure I could ever improve. Every issue I come to her with, she has a suggestion on how we can fix it, and helps make me feel like I am in control of my recovery! I cannot recommend her enough. ~Molly G; Very grateful for the exceptional knowledge, care, and comfort at Flourish PT. Alex was a treasure trove of knowledge. It is so clear that they are passionate about learning and about serving marginalized groups in their field. For the first time in years, I felt not only heard, but supported in my healing. I hope more people find Flourish. I couldn't recommend them enough. ~CB;

I worked with Dustienne while navigating my fertility journey and trying to conceive. Her bedside manner is unparalleled. She creates a space with her clients feel truly comfortable and seen. Coming to her for treatment was a much needed respite for the many taxing aspects of struggling to conceive. I will forever be grateful for her expertise, gentle manner, and patience.

Alex is super knowledgeable and respectful of any bodily issues or sensations. We have been working together for a few months and I have already noticed a difference in my pelvic floor mobility (I am several months post partum). The appointments feel like a therapy session, both physically and emotionally!

Our offerings

  • Pregnant person

    Pregnancy and postpartum physical therapy

We would love to support you throughout your pregnancy and postpartum journey.

While you are pregnant we can help you with any pain you experience (back, hip etc), urinary incontinence, and pelvic organ prolapse. In our plan of care we will cover different techniques and preparations for birth prep, practicing how to optimize body mechanics and pelvic floor muscle awareness.

Postpartum we will address any pain, leakage, prolapse and other concerns. We will look at intra-abdominal pressure management to help optimize core function as we treat diastasis recti abdomnis, or DRA. We will guide you in an individualized exercise program depending on your goals so you feel confident and strong as you ramp up exercise (if this is your goal).

Return to run programming is also something we love to help with!

  • Physical therapy for persistent pelvic pain

Physical Therapy for Persistent Pelvic Pain

Persistent pelvic pain (aka chronic pelvic pain) is defined by Lamvu et al as “pain localized to the pelvis that may be cyclical or non-cyclical and typically lasts 3 months or longer after failed initial therapies.”

There are 12 categories that persistent pelvic pain can be caused by and sometimes overlap: Reproductive, Urinary, Musculoskeletal, Other (not otherwise classified), Vulvovaginal, Vascular, Idiopathic, Neurologic, Gastrointestinal, Sensitization/Nociplastic, Overlapping Pain Conditions, and Mental Health.

Using the principles of pain neuroscience education, manual therapy, neuromuscular reeducation, biofeedback and therapeutic exercise we enjoy helping people return to activities they had to put on pause and feel better in their day to day life.

We are passionate about helping people feel better when they are dealing with a variety of pain conditions including endometriosis, interstitial cystitis, vulvar pain, pain with sex, perimenopausal changes, and more.

    Orthopedic Physical Therapy

In order to be an expert in pelvic health, we must understand how the pelvis connects to the entire body. We are one system that is all connected!

This means sometimes we need to ask muscles to do more work, get stronger and activate automatically. Other times we need to ask certain muscles to do less work to allow other stabilizers to do their jobs.

We treat all orthopedic conditions including back pain, SI joint pain, hip pain, shoulder pain while keeping in mind systemic considerations like hypermobility (incl hEDS) and musculoskeletal signs of menopause.

  • LGBTQ+ wellness

    LGBTQ+ wellness

Dr Alex is a nationally recognized speaker, teacher and pelvic floor physical therapist specializing in gender affirming care, pelvic health, and orthopedic concerns.

They will often treat folks pre-operatively before gender affirming surgery as well as post-op.

Looking at how shoulder, rib and diaphragm are moving and what muscles are overactive or underactive can be important for people who bind. Coming in for physical therapy pre and post top surgery is also helpful.

They would love to help you post surgery, if you have any musculoskeletal pain, or any pelvic pain or incontinence.

  • Two people practice yoga for pelvic health

    Yoga for Pelvic Health

Dustienne received her yoga certification from Kripalu in 2004. At that time she was using it as a personal practice to help with anxiety. She later discovered that using yoga in the physical therapy clinic was quite helpful for a lot of her patients, especially people suffering with persistent pelvic pain.

Dustienne offers therapeutic private yoga sessions in person in Boston and virtually. Sometimes she will work with a patient who is receiving physical therapy from another therapist and offer ideas for a home program.

She also teaches a two-day continuing education course thru Herman and Wallace Pelvic Health Institute and her yoga home programs can be found at Your Pace Yoga.

  • Dance physical therapy

    Physical therapy for dancers

As a professional dancer working in New York City for years, Dustienne understands the unique demands of a dance career on the body.

While living in NYC, she also worked as a physical therapist backstage for several Broadway shows and the Rockettes (via Physioarts).

She continues to stay active in the musical theatre world and is on faculty teaching Musical Theatre Jazz Dance at The Boston Conservatory at Berklee.
